A genetic link of some sort is a possiblity when dealing with a disorder that no one quite understands yet. An autism expert felt that genetics could have a part to play but research needs to be concluded and that takes time. Research for autism and treatments span many years which makes advancements slow.
Part of the problem with the research behind genetics and autism is that the data is a bit off. The standards to which a child is diagnosed with autism have changed over the years causing a bit of confusion. It is true, even without the skewed data, that the number of child autism cases are growing.
A treatment using genetic engineering may be 10 years off. The first step in the use for the public would be as a test, a preventative meaurse prior to pregnancy. The parents would probably have to match up on certain things to be a candidate to have a child with autism.
